Hannukah: More than we can handle

As a single candle burns in the Menorah, I think about the all too common phrase "God will never give you more than you can handle" and I think the story of Hanukkah demonstrates the falsehood of  this. The Menorah had to stay continually lit, but there was only enough pure oil for one day. The Maccabees, fresh from battle, would not be pure for seven days, which meant they could not make pure oil for seven days. In this moment, they were faced with more than they could handle. So would they claim that God couldn't possibly demand this much of them and defile the temple with impure oil? There was no human way to solve this conundrum. So the Maccabees lit the Menorah in faith, and when they acted according to the law of the Lord in the face of an impossible situation, God was more than enough. He gave them more than they could handle, but when they acted in faith, God MORE than made up for what they were lacking. So rather than God never giving us more than we can handle, He instead frequently gives us far more than we are capable of handling, and when we step out i the faith and light our lamps, He will provide everything that we are lacking.
